Is this a regular cab-crew, etc. 2wd or 4wd. What gears do you have in the diffs. This all helps to figure out your cam.

Forget the "chop". It'll slow the truck down and increase fuel consumption DRASTICALLY.

Most 4.8 trucks have terrible gears. You'd probably get more results from swapping those out and the converter as well.

Then if that's not "enough", 212/218 112lsa ABSOLUTE MAX. You can get a cam like that from TSP, BTR, Vinci, CamMotion, and any number of other places. Prolly cheeeeepest from TSP, maybe through ws6store.

You'd be AMAZED at how much difference better valve springs can make. Just slap a set of PAC1218s on it. Might REALLY surprise you how much of what you "think" is "cam problems", is ACTUALLY valve spring problems.

As RB04AV said for 4.8L, start with the gears and headers (4.10s would be good with stock diameter tires).

And in addition to answering 3wide's questions in post 2:
  • Do you tow? If so, max weight?
  • Peak rpm you think you'd shift at?
  • Keeping stock compression ratio or increasing it?

Depends on how you get "chop". If the cam is ground small with a tight LSA it will add torque everywhere above idle. Truck Norris would be my choice. I would of course upgrade the converter and gears. 4.8s love 4.30 or 4.56 gears if get up and go is what you are after.

Did a cam motion 208/214 .553/.553 110+4 in my wife's 5.3 tahoe and it was very noticeable.

I've got a 4.8 in the shop now with a 226/235 .610/.614 114+5 and a 94mm turbo haha. It's a turd.

OP,

You've received some great advice from the community. Having the questions answered from what some of the members asked would be helpful.

We'll offer up a baseline recommendation. It's right in line with what other folks have been saying for good reason. Check out our "Big Truck Torkinator" SUM-8728R1. Specs on it are .600/.585, 212/218, 110+3 with -5* of overlap. In a 4.8 this will have a nice steady lope. With its 33* intake valve closing it'll make great torque from 2,000 on up and pulls well to 6,500+ with our .600" lift beehives. It doesn't require gears or a converter. A set of 3:73+ gears would really help get this up and moving with good throttle response between gears. Add in a 2,500+ stall converter and it would really help bring this 4.8 to life
