Sounds like a lifter.

Ok fellas, I pulled the head on the side the sound was coming from ( used a stethoscope against the block, heads and oil pan) the sound was definitely at #5. After pulling the head, the valves look fine, the push rods are fine, the lifters still look new. No obvious failure. If a lifter was bad it would be pretty obvious right?! I rotated the crank around until all the pistons had a chance to be at TDC and I stopped periodically to push/ wiggle the pistons. I didn’t feel any abnormal movement. After that I drained the oil and the plug had fine metal shavings again. I had washed the pan thoroughly last month after pulling it to drill a drain hole for my turbo drain. I’m starting to suspect a bad bearing. I’ll be pulling the bottom end tomorrow.

The bottom of a piston is hitting the counter weight. Look again at the pistons. They should be be just above the deck at TDC.

Same sound when we bent rods 2 and 7 on my turbo motor. The counter weight would hit the bottom of the pistons. At first I didn't catch it but I went over each piston 1 at a time and found 2 that did not come above the deck at TDC.

#7 doesn’t make full stoke. Top of the piston doesn’t come flush with top of cylinder. FML 🤦🏼‍♂️

yup, we bent rod 2 and 7 on my motor in the direction of the pin. The counter weight was hitting the skirt just under the pin.

In my case, no rod bearing damage. Two rods and pistons and she was back up and running.

I’ll probably just replace all the pistons and rod. Get some forged internals maybe it won’t happen again. It was tuned for 14 psi most I had run was 12psi

It would be a good idea to go over your setup. In my case we had a boost spike over 20 PSI. I believe it went lean in that area causing the damage. The pistons looked good and so did the bearings.

In my case we were tuning it and it wasnt set up properly which is why it spiked. I had to contact the original owner and pick his brain on how it was set up to find our mistake. After that we verified the fuel psi wasnt dropping off and the injectors were keeping up even when it went into over boost.

im not sure what went wrong exactly. I wasn’t looking at boots when it happened. There is a chance it could have spiked. I’m running a walbro 450 and deatchwerks 72’s injectors we’re at 52% at 14 psi and 521hp I’m running a turbo smart manual boost controller. I’m going to get an innovative digital boost controller while it’s down to have some fail safes

Does anyone have any advise on some good replacement connecting rods? Should I replace the pistons as well? I don’t plan on ever running more than 700-800hp.
