Use the magnets, thats what I did. To tell you the truth, I think they would have stayed without the magnets. I was freaking out when I pulled out my cam. I thought one was gonna fall. But after I got it in and put my pushrods back in, when I pushed them down it had a bit of resistance. The lifters were pretty tight in the holes.

I've never used them before, but try rotating the tool, or perhaps even the engine. I have heard that the passenger side is a bit more difficult, but it should so in. Maybe some one who has experienced this will chime in.

i think big tex had a prob also and ended up returning them or something. i was told you could use a small diameter piece of round bar also say like a 1/4" to hold them up.

I've heard of some car guys using some 3/8 inch steel rod wrapped with the prickly side of velcro.

It's hanging up on 2nd set of lifters. I don't know why or how, but I know that's where it's hanging up. Try sticking the tool in so that the flat side of it is facing where the spark plugs would be, then turn it. That might help it out some.

Matt - I had the same issue and so did Ben using that tool. Driver side works great, but pass side only when 1/3 of the way in. I just went ahead and did the swap with out protection on that side. Be careful with pen magnets. There have been several guys who have broken off the magnet tip on the lifter and ended up having to to pull the head.

Do this as a test. Spin the cam to throw up the lifters. Use a pushrod to push the lifters back down onto the cam lobe. You can feel each lifter and how firm it is in the lifter cup. Mine took quite a bit of force to press them down. If they feel loose in there, or don't stay up off the cam after you spin it, then you really need the pen magnets. If the lifters stay up nice and tight, you are fine. Spin them and leave them up for 5 minutes and see if any fall (I highly doubt it). If not, get the radiator cleared, spin them up, and do a quick cam swap. I'm nearly positive you won't have any problems.

There is no room to turn the tool, it only fits in one direction. I nearly got the darn tool stuck in my block trying to force it past the obstruction. Its not worth the trouble to try to get it in there.

If you use the magnets ... get new ones. Don't use an old beat up one, that's how you get one to come off. This being the voice of experience.
