Default Huge "BANG" from the rearend of truck

Well, I was not sure so I posted this in two forum sections.

Last night , I was headed home and I was probably going about 25mph and hammered my truck. Next, I hear a huge noise that came from the rearend of the truck"BANG". When this happen, it felt like someone ran into the back of my truck. I was only about one mile from home, so I just slowed down and limped it back. But as I was going around a turn, I could feel the rearend making noises on one side. Each time I heard a popping sound I also felt a jerk in the rearend. I have not had a chance to take off the cover and look at it yet, but I will this afternoon.

Any suggestions on what happen and what this may cost me to fix it.

What really sucks is that I was going to sell the truck TODAY, but had to just run it one more time and look what happen.

Oh, I also have 4.56 gears in it and run 33inch SuperSwampers.

A friend of mine said that it may have just been a spider gear.?
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it really that bad?(New Rearend)
I just spoke with the guy at the dealership(The one that was going to sell me a new truck) and he said if I can get it to stop making noises that they will still honor our trade-in price. Any one know if this could be patched up. I will post back and let everyone know what I find inside the cover this afternoon. Thanks Later

Pull off the rear cover and take a look. It may be the locker / posi. If so, you could just remove the locker. It will run and drive fine, but the next owner will sure get a suprise the first time he takes it off road.

Scandalist dealers but go for it. Just let us know what you find.

My rearend did something simular when i blew the G80. It took out the ring and pinion too. Luckaly thats all. It only costed me $1100 for a new 4.10 ring and pinion and detroit locker installed. Yea i know i got ripped.

what it sounds like is the locker is messed up, friend of mine had the same problem, just take the cover off an make sure it isn't anything to do with the spider gears....if it is the locker just take it off, what the dealer doesn't know won't hurt them.

I had this happen w/ my open diff truck. The cross pin broke in 2 and let the internals slide around a little but it still drove. The noise was from the pin hitting the gears. Pull the cover and check it out. You may get away w/ just replacing the pin and putting some thick grease in there.

**** that happened to my '00 silverado when I hit the gas, my whole backend felt like it got hit and the truck went sideways and I almost lost it. I was making a 80mph turn when it happened. Then as I drove it, it felt like someone kept hitting me from behind. Put it on a lift and opened the differential cover and what do I see? A pile of metal shavings about 3" high, talk about busting it, ****.
