Default how long should a fuel pump last?

i have an 07 gmc with 36600 miles on it. heard the pump whine earlier today while the truck was idling. the tank was about about an 1/8 full. put some gas in it so its about 1/2 full now. i hear it whine alittle at startup, then it goes away. is this the beginning of the end for the pump? lol

just cant believe that this should be an issue at this point. will replace the fuel filter tomorrow. think the dealer will be flexible with warranty coverage, since it is over 600 past the 36000 mile warranty?

i know people have had em whine for years. but i drive alot, and dont want to end up screwed somewhere in BFE south dakota, or wyoming!

thanks!

The pumps can whine normally. I put in a brand new OEM unit and it whines occasionally.

If your truck has a fuel filter that is serviceable, replace it every 30,000 miles. If it doesn't, wait until the pump fails.

Over the years, I've fixed alot of noisy fuel pumps by replacing clogged fuel filters.

They usually get louder when the tank gets low on fuel. The pump is not completely submerged in fuel so therefore more noise.

I think you're right, but I wasn't sure......so, I made the recommendation, just in case.

yeah, I grabbed a fuel filter to replace mine in my 04 Silvy. Once i crawled under there, though, I quickly realized there was no serviceable fuel filter! Guess that's when they started to put them in-tank..
