Default High temps with the 160 t-stat

Runs just at about the 180 mark on a daily basis. It's my daily driver that never runs for more than an hour at a time since work and everything else is pretty close by.

1)When I put the A/C on, it gradually goes up to just under the 210 mark, like stock...is that normal? Guys with the 160, does yours do the same or stays consistently at the 180 mark?

2)Today it was hot...about 105 to 110 and I drove across the southland going between 75-90 the entire way, about a 3 hour round trip drive.
The temps were reading like I had the stock stat in...just a mark below the middle.
Is that also normal? I mean, I know it was hot and I was going fast the whole way, but wtf is the point of the 160 tstat if it doesn't stay cool? Oh yea, after getting off the freeway I was waiting about a minute for the light to turn green, and the temps went back down, to just above the 180 mark.

Seems what I would think "normal" but my buddy MacADaYear claims with his modded stock tstat his runs 180 all the time...with the A/C and what not...

Could it be I didn't burp the system correctly after I installed the 160 stat? I don't get it

Mine did not make much of a difference too. It runs just a little cooler than stock. I don't know what happened. I did burp the system pretty good. It made a more noticable difference on my 01 Sierra.

mine runs around 180, but i heard hypertech progrming helps lower it to the 160 mark. because the programer gives the option on the stat. but its better then running around 210.

I think the fan is a big factor in all this. The stock fan clutch engage temp is not going to change. You need e-fans with a temp sensor that will kick them on at the lower temp.

I agree with l82. I'm running a 160 and when the outside temps are in the low 80's and below the engine temp is about 175. On the hot days 95+ in traffic it will creap up to 185. Before I installed my e-fans on a hot day the engine temp would creep up to stock temp and hold here. Now when I hit the switch for my e-fans on a hot they keep the truck around 185.

With my modded stock tstat I have NEVER gone over 180...except when I was adjusting the tstat to the temp I wanted. If I have my ac on and am flooring it up hills the temp still wont go up at all (was doin this multiple times this weekend).

I think that with the 160stat it opens at a certain temp which drops you back to 180 or 160 or whatever, then closes back up which causes your temp to go back up.... untill it hits that point and goes back down agian.

With my modded tstat the spacer probaly leaves the tstat open a certain amount... or maybe it opens up earlier before the temps get hot.

I dont know if the way I have it is good or not but I know it doesnt get hot at all. I hope im not runnin it too cool... Its in the 170-175 range... should I run it a little hotter? 180-185? I have no computer adjustments for the tstat so im probly not gettin any gains anywayz.

Ching
I have the same problem
I installed a 180 F
I burped the crap out of it
The gauge goes right to 210 f
Called Hypertech - they stated that this is norm and
it is the gauge ?? and it is set to go right to 210.
Right now I am installing a Autometer gauge to
check the temp
I got a sensor and adapter for the rr of the right head
They state that the a/m gauge will read the correct temp -
I dont know if this is the norm - with newer trucks
I saw that many pre 2k trucks dont have this problem - but I know I do with my 03
I will keep you posted - I have an Carbon Fiber gauge and
pillar pod - so will see what happens

Don't worry about the burp in the long run. If you didn't do it right, the way the motor is designed it will eventually burp itself, since the reservoir is above the motor. I read that about the motor from GM's press release about the LS1 motors. Only the reverse flow pre99 motors would not burp themselves with time. GM also stated that the reverse flow actually came out as a quick fix to correct the head exhaust port area overheating, but labeled it as a performance design. But it is funny on the press release that GM admits it was a quick fix for poor head cooling design in the older motor. Another interesting fact is that the corvette motor is actually a 346" motor, for those guys that are **** about ours being 325's and them freaking out when we call it a 327!

Mine runs at 175 to 180 according to the predator monitoring, that is all day during 110 degree days with the a/c on full blast. It has only once got up to about 200 when I sat in a traffic jam on a 120 degree day with the a/c for about 1 hour. So it makes me think, are you just reading the temp guage, or are you computer monitoring it? The needle on the guage is not always set correctly!
