Default Here's what I got for $200

I picked up this LY6 with a few extra parts and wanted to see what you all thought about it. It supposedly came out of a 2007 NNBS 2500HD. Im guessing the VVT went out and that is my main concern. The piston tops all have minor gouges from the valves hitting them and I was told that it wouldnt be an issue. I just want a second opinion on it to see what you all thought. Are they safe to reuse or should I replace them with a set of flat tops? I dont have the heads or intake but if everything checks out okay I'll be buying a 24x reluctor wheel crank, rod bolts and a new set of rings and build the short block. Eventually I'd like to swap it into my OBS truck, but for now I just want to make sure its even worth the trouble. Thanks

I'd replace the pistons... And get a definite answer as to why that happened. Nice find for $200, though.

I was told that it went into reduce engine power and then this somehow happened... If I were to replace the pistons what factory replacement flat top could I use? Would LQ9 or LS2 ones work?

Not sure if you are looking for heads for this engine but I have a set of LY6 heads with Patriot Gold springs installed.

Yes you can use lq9 and ls2 pistons long as they are for floating rods.

Haha jvoisel... Thats what I was told!

Thanks for the replies. I found a set of new GM LQ9/LS2 pistons online the other day. A set of 8 would be $444 shipped.

I still need a set of rings. Ive heard good things about Mahle but Ive been reading up on rings and it seems that the LQ9 and LS2's had different ring packs. If i remember right the LQ9 had a 1.5mm, 1.5mm, and a 2.5mm but the LS2 had a 1.2mm, 1.5mm, and a 2.5mm. Which set of rings would I need?

The valve reliefs are supposed to be there, the little nicks aren't. I'd just drop a whole LS2 rotating assembly in it and go..... However, the factory valve reliefs do make it nice if you want to push the limits as far as cam choice. For a daily driver, put some flat tops in it, a nice cam around .600 and never look back.
