If you end up buying a complete engine, you can always part out the unused parts later on.

cam - If you decide on a bigger cam, you're going to need springs rated for more lift. What kind/size springs all depends on your cam. A cam only motor would need some head work.

Cooling - the 28" will work, but if you're towing, and or desert like conditions, you're going to want the 34".
Hey Nightrunner - notice the price Tootall paid for his long block? $500, not $1500!

Kiserhd - Whatever you buy, if you are planning on FI, you will need forged pistons. Stock cast pistons + FI = KABOOM! Also, I'd be surprised if the salvage yard will take the extra parts off your hands. The yards like to handle complete motors and they shy away from individual parts like coils, injectors, and intake manifolds. A better source for buying and selling is here on PT.net, LS1tech.com, and E-Bay.

a 6.0 longblock w/ low miles will cost you about $1500, which is not bad

IMO waht you should do is get a 6.0 longblock and swap it out, do all the boltons, and add a radix with a 3.0 pulley and you have 450hp+ add in the flt trans and aftermarket locker and you have it made

6.0 - figure $2k to have a little room to grow
flt trans - $2500
radix - $5k
gears and lsd - $1k
tune - $500 on a dyno

and you have a reliable 450hp

You're on the extreme high for prices. You can buy a complete 6.0, low mile pull out for that price.

gears + LSD + install, is around $600-700
dyno tune - depends on your area, you're really better off on a street tune (real life results.)

So you really think ill blow it up that easily? I figured I would be safe at 7psi. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the pistons they put in our motors Hyper Eucretic or something crazy like that where they add silicone into the mix and you end up with tighter tolerances but because they do not expand like forged pistons your only safe up to 500hp. Now from what I'm calculating/hoping for is around 400hp, I assume that would be a safe zone. But then again I may have read wrong.

Hypereutectic are better but not as good as forged. I've never heard of that 500 hp limit. Could be true but I don't know. I've just always read and heard that cast pistons and FI are a bad combination. You could get some more feedback by posting this question in the FI Forum.

I believe it was either an article or his book that I read it. Will Handzel - How to build high-performance ls1/ls6 v8s: for gm cars/trucks.
