Ahh ha, that's it! I knew you'd see this eventually. Like I said, I'd need to be standing over my motor to see the characters in person in order for the lesson to come back and flood into my memory.

Thanks hirdlej for helping out on my senior moment.

Interesting. But this can't differentiate between an LQ9 and LQ4 though correct?

no it won't differentiate lq4 vs lq9. But it will confirm to the buyer what the seller claims for engine year

I'm very interested to find out what I see when I pull the heads on my 6.0

Mine is supposedly an 02 LQ9...

What is the "front engine pad"?

It's the flat area right if you were looking down at your motor right between you and the cyl head. Sometimes the paint is rusty here and you have to swab some motor oil over the letters and numbers so you can read them.

Quickest way to tell if you have a LQ4 or LQ9 is to pull a spark plug and take a straight blade screwdriver and VERY GENTLY touch it against the cyl wall of the block and gently push down and draig it across the top of the piston. If you feel it sink down it's an LQ4, if it stays flat and smooth it's a LQ9

Are you talking about where they have 6.0L printed on the block?

Block deck, right in front of the cylinder directly behind the water pump in this picture. It's the flat surface of block/deck surface in front of the passenger side head, ON THE BLOCK.
