Help me figure out what 6.0 I got
#1
Hey guys I just got a 6.0 with approx. 30k on it...my buddy that works at the GM dealer had it(I guess they took it out because it had compression loss in cylinder 5)and sold it to another kid and it sat for a while and I met up with the kid and asked if he wanted to sell it...sure enough we agreed on 300 bones for a complete 6.0(minus exhaust manifolds and accessories)...
I havnt looked at it much seeing I was pretty busy and I brought it to my friends house where Ill be doing the swap...I took a valve cover off to get a couple of valve keepers(lost a one during my cam swap, and the ones that I ordered never showed up!
)and the thing looks mint!...there is still markings on the stock springs so Ill be suprised to see what the cylinders look like...
my big question is how can I tell if this early or late LQ4...is there casting numbers somewhere that will dictate the year and what not?...I would go look but the engine is 4 hours from me so thats no good...any input would be helpful so that way I can start looking for parts if I need to...thanks for your help fellas!

I know where they are and have been taught before how to read the numbers but I'd have to look at any of my blocks to refresh my memory how to read them.
The numbers are on the top of the block, on the passenger side bank right in front of the cylinder head. There's a few characters imprinted onto the block that will tell you the year, month and something else. PM hirdlej, he taught me how to read them but I'm having a senior moment.

thanks for all the input guys...but correct me if Im wrong but isnt there a difference in the crank in the 99-00 LQ4...Im 99.9% sure I have a LQ4 but my big question is weather or not I need to invest in a new crank to work with my trans...Ill have to get a hold of my friend to see if he can post the casting numbers...

05 up, have the LS2 internals(beefier), so they are all the same, other then the piston type q9 flat, q4 dished. 99-01 have iron heads, the longer crank. Post 01's 9's and 4's have the aluminum 317 heads. I don't know how to read the numbers on the block, unless you know what it came out of, or know the num codes, you have to pull a head.. Silvy SS, escalade LQ9, denali, 2500 trucks the LQ4..

On the front engine pad on the pass side you'll see a number that looks something like A145 the letter (A in this case) is the month of the year, the 2nd set of numbers is the day of the month (14th day in this case) and the last number is the year (5 for '05 in this case). Get me those numbers and I will decipher your block for you
