Default Headgasket

Getting my 799 heads redone and about to purchase some headgaskets. I was going to go with .040 or .045 cometics but I can't find them in stock anywhere. I found that felpro makes a .041 in a 3.945 bore which should work for my L33. Are these a quality gasket? Not too many reviews as I see most people run the cometics.

Also, Ive read cometics have a tendency to leak if the surface isn't immaculate. I'm not having the block decked, just going to clean it. I'm thinking maybe the felpros would be a little more forgiving. Just seeing if anyone has used these.

Pretty sure the FelPro will also be MLS. At least I've never seen one that wasn't.

If you clean the deck CAREFULLY, i.e. no divots or thumbprints with a wizz wheel and sanding disc or any buggery like that, the factory finish is fine. Stock gaskets were MLS.

The FelPro works fine on my lowly LM7. 60k miles on one set, then 100k on another, no hint of a failure. I used new bolts and followed FelPro's torque instructions, not the FSM.

I'm always weary of eBay and Amazon for some stuff because of fakes. I try to stick to summit or jegs for the most part.

I'll definitely check out the ones by ws6 store. I still have to measure my deck height for the pistons before I can order anything though.

I haven't seen Cometic stuff faked yet... You just have to be careful Whom you purchase from. I have had over 600 transactions on Ebay and that's mostly purchases.
Amazon is a different Story... They continue to disappoint

Wundercar is a resaler like RockAuto.
Supershops used to be a big performance shop back in the 80's- early 90's just like a Summit or Jegs.

Un-fortunately Since the pandemic neither Jegs or Summit are able to stock as much stuff. I have also found that I can purchase alot of the same items for less money.

For example. One of the name brand sets of bearings I routinely purchase are around $26-$27 dollars with free shipping on Ebay. They get drop shipped directly from the manufacture to me most of the time when I order them. The same bearing set is $50 at summit and if I don't order at least $100 worth of product, I have to pay an additional $10 for shipping. I have to pay State tax on either transaction as well.

Melling M295 Oil pump is another example. Summit had them in a white box as a Summit brand for $70 very reasonable. Then they went up to $80. I can buy the same genuine Melling M295 standard replacement pump in a genuine Melling box for $65-$70 with free shipping and not worry about spending $100 to get the free shipping.

Yes the oil pumps are being faked but again you have to be cautious of who you buy from. Look closely at the listings and don't buy from some one who says it may come in a generic box because they claim to purchase them in bulk.

Finally got my deck clearance numbers. Pretty low from what I've seen on other motors. I might go over it again after I clean some more carbon off the pistons.

What's everyone's method to cleaning the block face? I used acetone and a plastic gasket scraper. It worked decent but I feel like I need to get it cleaner for the MLS gaskets.

ATF and acetone mix I think is how I did it last time.
That or put it in the hot tank.
