To Header or not to Header...that is the ???
#1
I know there have been countless Header threads on this forum...but I did NOT find the answers to my questions when I searched. What I would like to know is this...with just a CAI and Catback system plus a Superchips programmer...will I lose too much low-end torque with Headers? Will I get enough out of them to justify them...any HP gains? I'm considering 2 to 3 different vendors from Ebay...all LT's with resonators and y-pipes. The price appears to be reasonable ($300-$310)...and they say they are all Stainless Steel. So...does anyone have any feedback on these three vendors...SPEED DADDY, DNA MOTORING, and DPT MOTORSPORTS? They pretty much all look the same in the pics...but how about real life...anyone know? With the LS1 Corvettes and Camaros that I have owned in the not too distant past...it was worth it...especially if I added a CAM...but I'm not as familiar with these truck LSx engines.
Thanks for any feedback,
Rick

You'll want to ditch the handheld for a real tune to start with...
As you have seen if you searched the headers you are looking at have all been bought by several members in the past few months..
As far as gains or loss's,if you stick with 1 3/4 headers then you shouldnt have any lowend power problems...

I can tell you none of those vendors sound familiar. And as a suggestion, go straight to the manufacturer, IMO, ie; PaceSetter or Hooker are names that I hear more often. Do your homework there to which suits your needs.
For my set-up - '02 5.3l with AEM CAI, PaceSetter Ceramics, ORY, and dump under the bed with Flowmaster. (I'd like to change). I also have a DMH Cut-out.
And ditch the hand held, it's not worth it. There are plenty of tuners on the site that can accommodate.
And ChevyScott is right.. the answers are out there, you just have to make up your mind. None of us can do it for you.
Here are a set of headers for sale....https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...d.php?t=461425

i'd save my money up and buy a good reputable brand set of headers....you'd be suprised at the hp gains of lets say an american racing set of headers over a set of lets say shorty's or ebay headers for that matter....
all depends on how much money you want to spend though because of course ebay headers will be better than the stock manifolds....
anyways, im gonna go wash my truck now
lmao..

An engine is a engine. The idea is to get the air in and out quicker and make the engine more efficient. So yes headers will help. I have heard of speeddaddy on ebay, theres a huge thread on here discussing the headers and about how here lately its been hard to get ahold of the guy.
I just installed my Pacesetter headers with ORY, I have a review thread on it in this section. I did not lose any low end, actually the truck feels like i have to use less pedal to get the truck moving, and thats with 3in collectors, 3inch y pipe, no cats and no muffler, absolutely no backpressure on the exhaust.
Also you need to toss that superchips, it does nothing for you really. And to prove it I ran a RCSB 5.3 silverado with intake, exhaust and superchips tune from a 60 roll and pulled the guy by 2 trucks, granted hes atleast 1000lbs lighter than my Tahoe and more aerodynamic him being lowered.

Sorry for blowing...I did not have a good Monday!
If I had a "clear" answer from my thread search I wouldn't have asked additional questions...which seems obvious to me...but I guess that's just me.
I've had the "coated" Hooker's, and the Stainless Bassani's on my Camaros...and they were great...perhaps some were a little pricey. The reason for considering the "Ebay" Stainless headers was purely for the price. My question about low end torque on my truck with just the Cold Air intake and Cat-back in conjunction with my 5.3 LSx engine was sincere because this is my first truck that I've even considered modding somewhat...and I was not sure how these engines compared to my LS1's in the past...especially with an automatic transmission...which I've never had. Bottom line...thanks for still answering my questions and suggesting some options to the "Ebay" alternative.
As for the Superchips hand-held...it was something I picked up for $150 new in the box...so I went ahead and picked it up. It allows me to check codes, adjust for my oversize tires...and it is used more for maintenance than performance tuning...even though there are a couple of things that can be improved. I still have the LS1Edit I used with my Camaros...but unfortunately it's VIN locked.
Now...I'll go wash my truck too!!

Maybe if you had listed what you want the headers to do, people could be of more help. If you are into towing, you want ones with 1 5/8 or at most 1 3/4 in tubes. The 1 3/4 have good mid-range torque while 1 7/8 make more power up top. If your just wanting street performance, 1 3/4 in would work fine. Another consideration is emission laws of your state, does Indiana have emission checks, are they visual, etc.
Generally speaking headers on a truck are very similar to headers on a Corvette. I have had both and what the others say about tuning is spot on. When you change the air path, velocity, turbulance, etc the PCM will need to be optimized for these changes and each engine reacts slightly different with these changes. The ebay headers have been used by many on the forum and if I recall correctly they are a knock off of the first edition Dynatech's.
These headers will burn up spark plug wires rather easily if they are not properly insulated and tied away from them.

yes headers will be beneficial to you and as long as you dont run some outrageously large tubing after them you wont hurt any low end. that set of thortley tri-y headers that lady3bglover posted up for you to look at are a good deal, id definitely pick up that set with the y-pipe before i bought any headers on ebay. and like everyone else said, get yourself a mail order tune or a live tune, hand held programmers are junk.
