Default Has Anyone Cammed a 5.3?

I am looking for a cam for my Silverado. I am not sure what cam people tend to go with. I was looking at a LS6 cam but heard that was a wimpy cam. So I was told about this one.

From Thunder Racing's website I'd go with the 214/220 .600/.523 115 LSA cam. It has a wide enough LSA that you'll retain a lot of your stock idle qualities and don't need different length pushrods like you would with the LS6 cam. With as much lift as this cam proivdes, however, you will need at LEAST the Comp 918 valvesprings.

Sure, you could go with a bigger cam like a few others suggest, but on a motor with stock heads and intake? Why bother? The heads/intake/exhaust cannot flow enough cfm to make use of the prolonged valve events. Plus this cam will be fairly easy to tune by most local tuners without other mods to the vehicle.

If I knew a little more about your setup (like current/future mods, gears, etc.) I could probably make a better recommendation. Hope this helps!

Anyone actually have a performance cam in their 5.3? How well did it react with it and do you have any numbers? Thanks

? I think a lot of us have cammed their 5.3's! I run a 224/224 114 w .578" adv. 4* and am making 330hp.
Search the forums, there is tons of info on this motor and cam combos.

Yeah, I'm sure the cammed guys easily out number the non cammed guys here.

Check out the Cam Guide sticky, that will give you a good base to start from.

I just got a 224/224 .581/.581 114 for mine but it hasn't gone in yet. The cam you mentioned looks pretty good, I have heard people with a similar cam in a 5.3 that seemed happy with it. BTW, nice color on the truck, really reminds me of mine.

you definitely need to check the archives... mucho knowledge in here man!! there are some awesome reviews and explanations through the search option.

for some places to shop check out Thunder Racing (as you stated), Comp Cams, VHP (Vinci High Performance), and FMS (Futural Motorsports).

i have a 220/220 .564/.564 114lsa.....

this cam is real streetable, did not hurt the drivability at all, plus it has a mild lope to it... I am running this cam with a 2800 converter.... it gets the job done... but I think Im still going to go with a 3200 converter in the near future, just incase I go with a bigger cam...

The cam looks good to me, but you WILL need longer pushrods. The way you get the duration, and lift is by cutting the base circle (cang go bigger, or it wont fit through the bearing journals) so ask whoever told you that you dont need them how they are getting the lift on that cam.

Pretty sure cammotion will grind whatever you want. I believe they have some unexperienced guys there (that just started) cause of what they told Brad, but they have some guys with experience too. My neighbor is the owners sister. Kip told me he would grind me whatever I wanted.
