Default Got an Important question to ask?

I changed oil yesterday and have been keeping close watch on oil consumption. My 2002 Silverado SPortside has used about 12 Oz of oil. It has 3119 Miles on it. Is this normal or should I be concerned? What is the oil consumption of your folks trucks with 5.3 if any? Thanks Lee!

That's not entirely unheard of on these motors when they are new. If your consumption goes up then I would say there could be a problem. It should go down. According to GM it's not abnormal to use 1 qt every 3 to 5k. Some guys claim to never experiance oil loss. When I put in the new motor, I lost less thn 1/2 a qt after the fisrt change at 3500 miles. That was after the 500 mile break-in change.

I bought my truck used with 4300 miles (2000 5.3L). I have since done 3 oil changes (12,000 miles current) and the level never fluctuates, I have seen 0 consumption.

Perhaps I am just one of the lucky ones...I don't agree with 1 qt usage over 3000 miles that Chevy says is ok though. I had a car with 173,000 miles with worn rings, valve guides and oil leaks that didn't use up that much oil in a 3000 mile period.
