Just understand that the ASA cam is still really mild. Personally, I'd go carbed and run something around 235-238 duration and 600+ lift for an old TA. Gotta have the rumpity sound for old school cars IMHO!
I hear that but I've gotta consider drivability and such. Its not going to be a daily driver or anything but I would like to drive it a lot during the summer and whenever the weather is good. I would say I'm trying to keep it a bit on the mild side, the high end of mild if you will.

That's just it, the ASA cam is still on the baby side. Go with something in the same duration/etc but in a higher lift. Somewhere around 560-570 is still considered mild for these engines.

what about changing the rockers for 1.8? wouldnt that get you close to the .560. i think it would more .555.

The 1.8 rockers would not be cost effective. The money would be better spent on an aftermarket cam with less exhaust duration, more lift and a bigger LSA.

That's not really true, when the heads begin to max out around .525 of lift. If any of you has ever see a flow chart for some 317 heads then you know that they do flow about 30-40 cfm more than stock 5.3L heads but they max out no more than .525 lift. Basically, you won't be gaining any horsepower out of going with a higher lift cam because your heads are maxed out.

So essentially duration and lobe grind are the two main factors you should consider when you buy a cam. This is just from a scientific standpoint.

Oh, and then when you get new heads, the truck intake maxes out pretty quick too. It's a never ending cycle.

I don't believe that's entirely true. The lower LSA will bring the torque in sooner than a higher LSA, which is why boosted motors need a larger LSA (115+) than a lower LSA (110-114) and so that it'll pull more vacuum.

Personally, I'd go with something along the range of 220ish, not much larger than that if you're gonna keep the stock TC...

If you upgrade your stall to like a 3000 stall, or 3200 stall, then go for something around the 230ish range. Get a custom ground comp cam like this...

228/234 .571/.576 on 112lsa

That should get you moving quite well... And check out WCCH... they can hook you up with a nice set of ported 6.0 heads that will make it breath quite nicely!
