Default Gas Gauge Messing Up?

My Gas Gauge Has Gone A-wall. I'll Fill My Tank Up And It Will Randomly Go From Full To Empty And Continue This Pattern Until I Start Moving, But If I Stop And I Am Just Ideling It Starts It Again. What Could Be Causing This And What Can I Do About It?

Best thing to do would be hook it up to scanner and see what the actuall value of the tank level is. IF it is the sender, you will need to drop the tank and replace the part.....PITA

Same thing happened to mine. Sender unit...basically a dead spot in the resistor. Had it done under warranty but asked what it would normally cost, dealer quoted me $400.
