Default G80 work on '97 1500 series truck?

I have a friend with a 97 model fullsize that has the god forsaken peg leg aka dog leg or single trak posi unit. I was wondering if a G80 would work in this rear? The G80 would be a good upgrade right? He isn't making much power now but there are plans for a twin turboed 421 one day but we aren't out of college yet.

So would he benefit from the swap? I beleive the truck has 3.73's in it but I'm not sure.

The G80 will work fine in his truck. If he has 3.73's he should have a GT4 code in his glove box. I have a new and a used G80 for sale if he is interested.

Won't work. The outer races for the side bearings are too big on the 99 and up, and I have done extensive searching for a "specialty" bearing and so far I haven't found anything that will work.

I think they use the same carrier and just the bearings are different. So I think it works. Isnt the inner race the same size and just the outer race is bigger on the newer housings?? I know they use the same ring & pinion sets.

I want $295 + shipping for the new one and $200 + for the used. And they will work fine, I have installed several of them.
