Exclamation Fuel Gauge Is Possessed. HELP!

Fuel level kinda jumps a bit mostly flat lining causing the low fuel light to come on in the message center. My fuel gauge lies to me.

I understand that this is a common problem. I also understand that it is the fuel level sending unit. I also understand that a replacement fuel level sending unit is about $300. If this is the case, I'm thinking that a fuel cell is the way to go. Anyone have any experience with a bad fuel level sending unit?

Thoughts or ideas?

Anyone ever swap in a fuel cell?

your are right on everything you said. but how big of a fuel cell can you get? it would be a pita to have to fill it up if you drive a lot.

I dono what Im going to do. It would be nice to put a cell where the spare tire lives that would help with the trucks horrible weight distribution and traction. But you're right I would need a large cell to be happy with the drivability.

Anyone else have any input. I hear that I may be mistaken on the price and it is much cheaper then I thought.

Any have a take-out Fuel Sending Unit?

I have the same problem. I forget who it was, but someone on here who works at a dealership was kind enough to fax me a copy of FSU diagram. You don't have to replace the whole expesive thing, just something in it. Let me see if I can find it...

The sending unit does come separately from the fuel pump. I changed one on a 2000 not long ago. The price was only $130-150 Cdn so it will be much cheaper in the US. The sending unit just clips onto the side of the fuel pump bucket.
