Default a fool and his money

Well I am new here and would like a little info on the 5.3 that turned out to be a 4.8. Oh well it's mine now and was prepared to live with it. But I was also under the impression it was an 06 I believe the engine numbers translate to a 1999. let me know if I am correct. 022210991833680. If so I believe this motor puts out considerably less than the 06. 255 vs 285 and lets not talk about already asthmatic torque. What are the differences between these years to make the 30hp jump. can it be regained economically? Just a little bit about what I was doing with this motor. 68 Wagoneer transplant.3975 lb GVW thought I might be able to get by with the smaller engine in a lighter SUV.Thanks for any input.

What is the goal for the wagoneer? Are you okay will turning a lot of rpm? The 4.8 will forever be rev happy and want aggressive gears and a loose stall. It can pick up power like any LS motor. Just don't expect it to be a monster. The trick flow 216/220 cam with springs and push rods can net you 75 more HP without much sacrifice. You will want a lot of rear gear. If you have a dana 44 with 3.31 stock gears I hope you plan to swap ratios. If you have anything taller than 31" tires I would want 4.56s.

the more powerful 4.8s came with 799 heads slightly bigger cam and bigger intake and throttle body. But lucky for you the short block is mainly the same so a little headwork and a small aftermarket cam you'll be more powerful than the newer 4.8s.

It is stock. dana44 I was not planing to swap gears. Just wanted a power plant able to do it's intended task. Haul the family around. pull a small travel trailer around one a year on cross country trips.

$1400 with flashed pcm, painless harness, inline fuel pump, extra fuel rail and coils and all associative installation parts needed for the swap.
. anyhow i found a 2000 5.3 long block and was wondering if a can make this work with the pats I have? pcm intake fuel-rails, coils, etc. or even if I have to swap crank and rods. is this doable? Also before I pick it up will the 5.3 be stamped on the pass side head-gasket tab? if anything i can hone and put new rings in it if the accessoI just purchased a 1999 4.8 under the impression it was a 06 5.3. anyhow i found a 2000 5.3 long block and was wondering if a can make this work with the pats I have? pcm intake fuel-rails, coils, etc. or even if I have to swap crank and rods. is this doable? Are you sure it's a 4.8 and not a 5.3?

To answer you question yes the 5.3 and 4.8 long blocks are interchangeable other than tuning I would want a little more power out of a 4.8 for your desires.

I jumped the gun on this one. I saw a post that stated the head-gasket tab will state the displacement. It read 4.8. I just got done checking piston and it is dished. Now i need to determine the year of the motor. The pcm is for 2003 but do not know if it is the one that came with the motor originally. the injector codes are for 2001-2007. is there any way to determine year? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to look at the block in front of the water pump on the pass side.

There is an Alpha numerical date code there. Usually 4 digits, some times 5.

The difference in the slightly more power full engines was the cam and tuning. there are also some minor internal difference's like coated pistons and Floating pin rods.
