Default Finally got a cam

I am going to buy a cam from a member on here. Its specs are 224/224 .581/.581 112

Gonna save over winter time and pick up some comp 918s, etc etc and install it sometime at the first of the year. I think it should work out pretty well. Your thoughts.

Yea its a comp cam. No mods as of yet, but the price I couldn't pass up. It will be a bit before I install it, just ran across it and decided to go with it. Good choice?

I think it all comes down to personal taste... I seem to dislike larger cams (220/220), but love my current smaller 210/218 112. I get a big kick out of the powerband this cam gives me.

Bigger cams will have a softer low end with lots of power up high. They'll generally love to be revved out. Mine 220/220 112 liked to be driven hard.

Smaller cams will keep more power down low, and even increase it, without moving the meat of the powerband a up beyond what the stock tach reads...

I think alot of people would be suprised at what a custom cam matched to one of our motors, comes out looking like. And I mean really matched. Not the sorta match where you tell them what motor you got and they pull out the 10 dollar calculator and come out with the magical cam.

Alot smaller than I imagined. @ .05 anyways.

Lets hear some specs!

What what the powerband feels like with my cam - In a 6.0, to keep ALL lowend power, and increase throughout I'm imagining it'd be like 208/218 113-114LSA as you "general" specs.

Just to be different, I'm going to see how far my 210/218 (and stock converter) will take me.

Edit: I have to reword that last part for Tex AND SS5.3: I WANT TO see how far... I can't promise how long that will be for.

Andy, I think thats a pretty aggressive cam. Its going to take some tuning to run right. More than likely, you'll need a converter or you'll end up slower due to the loss in torque, but its going to pull very hard from a roll. It should pull past 6400 in your 6L. Be expecting a nice lope too.

I have a 224 .581 114 +0 cam that I was going to throw into my SS just to compare to my current 218 .563 114 +2 cam. I haven't done it though.

Will it run at all with the stock converter? The way you guys sound as if it will bearly pull itself down the road at normal speeds hehe. I dont have the $$ for a convert at this time, but one will be in the future.

Also, I ordered the comp 918s, would you recommend getting ti-retainers or just sticking with the stock ones? Also, 7.4 hardened pushrods are needed to correct?

Hey now!

ACDenali: If they don't show up, I think snakeeater and F8L are running bigger cams... (could be mistaken though)

With my 220/220 112, I lost power right up to highway cruise RPM's - about 2,000 to 2,100 or so. It was definitely not incredibly slow or falling on it's face - it just didn't have the power or throttle responce like stock. It was more like bone-stock 5.3L power. Rolling on the throttle locked up in OD didn't do a whole lot - I typically had to kick it down a gear which got a little annoying to me. If your area is mainly flat, I don't see it as being a deal-breaker...

Up above 3,500 though - the thing booted hard.

In the bigger cam's defence - I think they're really meant to work with a good set of headers - which I didn't have at the time.
