Do I have to buy 2 sets of gears for 4x4?

My friend and I were talking about gears for my truck today. He said I will have to buy two sets of 4.11 gears for my truck, one for the front and one for the rear, is this correct? Are they the same gears, or are they different, ie., are the 4.11 gears in back larger than the front??
He said the 4 wheel drive will not engage if I don't do both...

yup, he's right.
It's one of the reasons I skipped the nitrous plan on my truck because I would need to go to a taller gear like a 4.56 if I wanted max effort out of the truck and at $1500 for a gear swap you can forget it. Plus gas milage is worse
