Question Diff between 6.0l+8.1l???

Im selling a 99 dually, 454.
Never pulled with it, but im getting a 2,500HD.
just wondering how much beter for towing/Driving the 496 is over the 360.
What kind of gas milage between the two.
Is the 496 worth it?
Very hard to find one.
Also i know the 6.0 is 300hp 360tq. What is the 8.1?
Thanks Brad
oh yhea, im pulling a 20' enclosed with a 3600lbs car in it.
I do it now with a 5.3 avilanch with a 7300GVW, it strugles a bit.

I don't know about your other questions, but it's 340hp, 455tq!
A real torque monster AND you can use LS1 Edit with it!

Wow, i didnt know the tq was so high!!
I know the des and the 496 both rated at 12,000 lbs!!
So they are close.
Im a bit scared of milage with it. Must be a pig!!!

The 8.1L is a single digit gas hog, and has been known to burn a quart or 10 of oil every 3000 miles. If you don't mind the mileage and oil thing and want POWER it's not a bad choice.

The 6.0L is a nice strong motor and gets decent gas mileage, doesn't burn oil, and will tow most loads just fine. Obviously it doesn't have the power of the big block but, it's very respectable for a gas motor that is giving up a few liters of displacement.

The DURAMAX will flat out kill both of the above motors though.

I was told the 496 would see about 7 mpg towing. Thats a bit nuts, My 5.3 towing gets 9-11 mpg.
I think maybe the 6.0 is my best bet.

I'd like to see an 8.1 burning 93 oct NO TqMgt (if it has it, which I bet it does) and a good tune. I'd bet 400hp/500tq is easily attainable in stock form.

Hell I got +2mpg city/+3mpg city after my tune on a 5.3 ...

I had a 2500HD 8.1/Alli 4x4 CCSB 4.10:1 gears too, I drove for a day back in '02 and it was a beast. It had some mad torque...spin tires w/o a problem, power brake easy. It would be a fun truck but that MPG sucksass stock.

I went from a 6.0 Suburban to an 8.1 Suburban. Very noticeable difference in power (even stock). The 8.1 Sub towed the 6.0 without having to work hard. Neither of my trucks burn much oil but some people have had to check the gas and oil. I usually don't have to add anything before the "change oil" light comes on.

As for gas mileage, that can suck sometimes. Average for the Suburban is 11 (sometimes 12) unloaded and high 7s while towing. The Silverado usually sees 8-9 MPG unloaded and high 7s while towing. I usually run at 70-80MPH most of the time with a trailer hooked up. The wheels/tires that I use really don't help mileage to much. A Duramax would give you the best of both worlds - power and awesome mileage!

I think Im going to stick with the 6.0 HD.
Then Ram air, Exhaust, Free mods, then LS1 edit and a vara ram stack, and It should be good for a while.
Any idea on 1/4 mile times on the 6.0 2500 HD with small mods?
Thanks for all the info

6.0 with a RADIX = PLENTY of power

As for the ET, what will the configuration be?
