Unhappy diesel fuel in a gas engine

Well who has all done it or seen it done or heard of it being done?

I get a call today while i am at school letting me know that my step son pulled up to a gas pump that his buddy was pumping diesel fuel on and dumped 5 gallons of it in his 01 dodge ram 6 cylinder. Apparently he didn't see the big green sticker on the pump say DIESEL FUEL.

Well, he got a mile down the road and the engine started banging and clanking until it died. Well, i think he pulled over and killed it. Now it won't start.

I had to tow him home. BTW, My wifes TB towed it like a champ. never knew it was back there.

so far i have new plugs for it, dropped the tank and am ready to drain it and wash it out with gas. then install it and dump some gas in it and try to drain the lines of all the diesel.

question is, is there an easy way to drain the lines or should i just uncap the fuel rail or whatever it has and let the fuel pump, pump it out? btw, do you think this engine will run again? i am skeptical.

any and all suggestions are welcome.

you will need to drain the tank and put in some good gas. then drain the fuel system either using the pump or another way. yes it should run again.

in a weird way i hope it doesn't run again. that way he can at least buy a v8 and we can throw it in there. wonder how many people have dumped a 5.7L in the old body style. i can always find use for a small 6 cylinder for my lawn mower or something.

Yes it will run again. I had to run 5 gallons of diesel in a 75 gallon tank of gas in my old motorhome to keep it from vapor locking. Being diesel mechanic I've seen this and a hole lot more of people put gas in a diesel. Just drain the tank put some fresh gas in it uncork the fuel line up front let the pump push the diesel out and your good to go.

Dad accidentally put 5 gallons of diesel in my mom's 1994 suburban. Good thing it has a 42 gallon tank. He just filled the rest with gasoline. Diluted it out pretty well.

Could you put an air hose up to the fuel line that goes to the rails, and blast through it with the pressure tap (shrader valve)off of it? That might work well.

We had a car come into work this week where the same thing happened...the cat converters were glowing red.

i plan on wrapping up the draining and cleaning the fuel lines out tomorrow. i'll post up how everything turns out. i told him he owes me 100 bucks for the trouble. if he won't pay me is grandma will. so at least i'll get a little spending cash out of the deal. lol
