Is the dealer right?

I asked the $tealer what I need to change my gearing from 3.73 to 4.10
They said that GM does not make a 4.10 for my 10 bolt 8.6 and that not only would I have to change the front and rear diff but my transfer case would also have to be replaced ($2000) and that the computer would not be right-
They also told me this is true for all 4WD 2002 and that no 1500 series has a 4.10 in it (2002)
How much (and what) of this is true?

You can use the 8.5" ring an pinion set (I have US gear which is the OEM brand 4.10's with a detroit locker), but You can get 4.10's from factory in 4wd vehicles, so I don't know what the dealer was talking about.

I would stay as far away as possible from that dealership.
Tell that frickin' moron to take a look in a Tahoe brochure, you can order a 2002 Tahoe with 4.10 gears ($50 option).
You don't have to change the transfer case (I would love to hear his reasoning behind this).
All it takes to correct the computer for the gear change is a HPP3.

I believe 4.10's in a 4wd is the GT5 option. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
Don't ever believe the dealership morons. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Thanks for the info. I guess it was my own fault for even asking the dealership. I am going to look into the US gear 4.10's and install them myself- Is this possible, my local shop told me I could not do it myself but a friend said he has changed many and that it is not that hard-
Have you guys put the gears in or have you taking it to a shop?

I almost forgot- The dealers reasoning behind the transfer case- "Everything is affected once you change the gear ratios" he later told me that "there are 3 different transfer cases" and that I had to "install the corresponding transfer case" to match the gears I wanted to install-
Dealer = Hurd Chevrolet (Rhode Island)
BTW I think that my tahoe will be the last thing I purchase there-

Installing gears is a little more complicated than just bolting in a new ring & pinion. There are special tools involved so that the proper specs are maintained to keep the gears from howling and/or premature wear/failure.
