Default damn. rear end broke yesterday...

You let the clutch out and a loud banging spinning shitty sound comes from the rear end. Hopefully it just broke the carrier and locker. I ordered the auburn 8.5/8.6 30T pro series diff, and richmond 4.56 gears. I also bought a master bearing kit.

Paid 715.00 for all of it, 455 for the diff, 186 for the gears, and 74.00 for the bearing kit. Not sure what the install is going to run me yet. You guys think I have everything? Should I have gone with something different? Something else broken maybe? It almost sounds like it spun the teeth off of one of the gears...

I can't tell ya what you broke, but I am curious...why did you go with the Auburn unit vs. an Eaton? I am on the road to replace my G80 and am thinking the Eaton's rebuildibility is an importnat factor, especially for those of us that are supercharged. Just curious...

Hope this does not happen to my rear end when I get my T56 in!

In fact I just broke the rear end out of my 79 Ford F150 Saturday night, the night I took my 4L60 out of 1TrueSS! D'oh! Oh well!

I have that Auburn unit with my 3.73s. I thought the Auburns were rebuildable?

Keep us updated on those 4.56s

Why did you choose 4.56 gears with a manual trans? Even most of the F-Body guys are running 4.11 or less. Are you planning on running a tall tire? I would think you will need at least a 29" tire with that combo, but I'm not sure. Just curious....not bashing by any means.

I'm running 4.56's, but I also run a 31.2" tire. I love them! I haven't noticed a decrease in gas mileage, and it's definatley what my torque-less 4.8 needed.

Also Auburn diffs tend to last longer than Eatons, and I've heard that if it does wear out, they'll pro-rate you for a new one.

I chose the auburn because that's what my distributer had on hand, I heard good things about both of them. The auburn was more expensive though. I chose 4.56 because a lot of fbody guys like 4.11 with their smaller tire size, so with my 30" tall tires I think it will be fine. Only time will tell though...The install will run me around 200 bucks. The guy next door is the largest mechanic in norman, and he has a pretty good rear end guy...
