Default Damn The Luck!

Damn the bad luck! Everything was flowing smoothly, the cam was in, the truck was running great! Richard (99SilveradoSS) stopped by the dealership today & thought I would let him listen to the truck...all was good. He listened & liked the sound the new cam. So I said what the hell, let's go for a ride so I can show you the difference!

We hop in & off we go, we get down the road & the truck is feeling good so I stop & say watch this baby light these 285/50R20's up, I start to smoke them, & I see a car behind us so I take off. We get down the road to the entrance of the interstate, lay in to it & BAM! tHE TRUCK QUIT MOVING! THE DRIVESHAFT TURNS BUT THE TRUCK DOES NOT MOVE!

looks like the g80 has been ripped apart. For you guys wondering why, I will give you some insight:
  1. 20 inch wheels with 285/50R20 TOO MUCH MASS
  2. TORQUE MANAGEMENT? I have removed all torque management
  3. the oversized servos along with no torque management (shifts really hard even with the 20's)
  4. GM drivelines suck! I know this first hand working at a chevrolet dealership.
now I have the luxory of watching my **** sitting in the air on a rack in the shop. With only 15k on the clock I have now managed to blow-up a 4L60E & now the infamaous G80 locking rear end. This is absurd, I thing I will trade the truck in on a honda. My wife drives one & I have beat the crap out of it & it refuses to go down. I have done things to this car that defies the laws of physics. At least it is still under warranty.....

I would never get a honda, I don't think they would even let me park it at work....lol I am just sick of this damn thing breaking & it is new! I am glad that warranty will cover it but I need to get a real vehicle besides my daily driver to beat the heal out of. Something I can trailer to the track, like an old malibu or caprice

Yea , it sucks dude. Ive been there. I blew up my rearend and the dealership I work at wouldnt cover it because the service manager told GM that it was caused by me lowering the truck. I called GM and they said they couldnt fix it because I lowered the truck. I was like WTF? I then asked him to explain it to me how that affects my rearend. He couldnt come up with an answer. Figures......

Yep, I just went through my rear end too and even though it had not failed, it showed a lot of wear and a bunch of pits in the spider gears. Pits in my book mean lesser quality components. All that crap is gone now so we will see.

everybody is blowing out trannys, torque converters and rear ends. what also sucks is I know someday my luck will run out also. I have 45,000 on my 2000 5.3 auto. I bracket race at least once a month with drag radials. my whipple makes over 450 lbs of torque. used to shift it at 6000. tranny is pure stock never even changed the fluid yet. has a eaton posi. so far not a problem of any kind. It is driven hard but with a awareness of its inherent weakness..

It's not the mass of your wheels that did it, it's the increased traction combined with harsh shifts. Any wheel/tire mod that will hold traction under more torque is increasing the load on the rear end. Wider stickier tires have the same effect as larger tires - both will put more stress ont he driveline under power. Setting up the trans to shift hard might seem amusing but it's wrecking havoc on your driveline. The cast case the G80 is made from is prone to cracking because of how little material is left connecting the right and left halves. Jolting shifts can start these cracks. The slightest structural weakness in the carrier housing can result in catastrophic failure when the unit attempts to lock up. G80's self-energize by using input torque to push the clutches against the housing from the inside out. The very force of the lockup process is actually trying to explode the thing apart.
