maybe it just cooled off faster because it was hotter and got right back down to where it started; +-a few degrees of the blank one.

I was thinking of something less extreme like brake dust or maybe driving down the occasional dirt road.
As far as motorcycles go the cross drilled rotor seems to make more sense as the rotor is more exposed to the air, thus an increase in the benefit of cooling and of course making mud spaghetti.
