Default converter in a 6200 lb 4x4?

Brooke, or anybody else that also has a 01 or 02 2500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0 - anybody try a different stall converter on these 6200 lb trucks? Once these things get rolling, they really pull, but I'm tired of getting pulled off the line and having to play catch-up. Wondering how much that converter would really help, and whether it'd be worth the 6-700 bucks.

Thanks,
Jason

Jason, For what it is worth since I have the 8.1L and my truck weighs in at 7100, changing the torque converter as part of a transmission upgrade is certainly worth it - in my case to a 2600 HD equivalent with new backplate and Kevlar clutches + the Transgo performance kit. That combination is worth almost .5 at the track and definitely improves the 60' numbers.

Is yours the 4L60E or the 4L65E [5 planetarys] version?

Jack

It's actually the 4L80E (or could be the 4L85E ?) not sure what the difference is between the two. As you well know, the first gear of 2.48 in the 4L80's really hurts the off the line with these heavy vehicles. What did your converter cost, and where'd you get it?

Thanks,
Jason

I had the work done at Century Automotive & Transmission here in Houston - Mike Kurtz is a very knowledeable guy, races and knew exactly what I needed to get it on. He talked me into the local rebuild and change to the converter, clutches and rebuild - havent been at all sorry. My stall is about 2800 with the Whipple.

Total installed was about 1600 - that included the Transgo install.

Jason,

I know Mike at YANK has several options for our trucks. I know I miss having a converter in this big truck.. That 2.48 first gear is way to long but GM does that for towing strenght. I know, I plan to have a converter in this truck by this fall..

Just remember, if you go to big, it will hurt your towing capacity.. To small and you will be wishing for more all the time..I would talk with mike at YANK and let him help you with your needs

NO doubt, a converter will make a hug difference in these 6200 lb trucks. They run really well from a roll but getting the weight moving is the trick.. Right now, my Nitrous is my converter..hehe <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
