I think with any cam swap you will want new springs at least. A mild cam that gives about 30 more HP is the Comp 212/218. Its rather mild and will be ok with stock tuning. May have to set the idle up a little, but thats free.

Get a 2000 Fbod cam, Z cam. It won't require a spring change and it has a good amount more lift than the stocker you have. I don't remember the numbers exactly but I do know that .500 is the max you can go with stock springs.

Crane does a cam that works with stock valvesprings it's 208/216 .500/.500 114.If you want to go with stock tuning and just slip in a cam that would be the way to go.The power increase should be a lot better than adding a stock ls1 cam.

It will give you all the cams, springs, retainers, lifters, rockers concerning the nbs trucks.

If your going through the trouble of a cam swap especially on a reg cab 5.3, I would not waste my time with anything under a .520 lift. That 212/218 they are talking about is an 212/218 .522/.529 114 Comp cam. I have one with Comp 918's and hardened pushrods on my 4.8. Now my tunning is off (due to my communication problems with LS1 Edit and the PCM), but with a 5.3, you should be fine.
