You're both right. Duration and lobe separation angle are the two major factors in calculating overlap. In short though I higher duration cam(230/230) will generally "lope" harder than a (212/212) because generally most cams have a lobe separation angle between 110-118

Sounds like a custom grind 216/220 112°. I have a 216/220 114° and it feels good even without a tune. But like K1500 said, He should get gears too.

if he is running that size tire...he needs to go with a smaller cam i.e. 216/220 or 212/218 or else hes gonna have to run a huge stall which in turn will cause tranny to heat up...which aint good

That second part makes no sense chief. Plenty of people run big stalls with big tires. That's not to say he won't have other issues, but a $50 transmission cooler will solve the heat problem.

I agree with most all of this, but your missing the point. Hes not wanting the cam to make his truck faster, he just wants a lopey idle.
