Default cam question

when upgrading to a bigger cam from the stock cam (on my silverado ss), should you always expect to sacrifice some low end power to get gains higher up, and vice versa? i basically want a cam that will keep me my low end grunt, but give me some more power everywhere else, as well as giving it that loud nasty idle note. thanks guys

I gave up NOTHING with my cam swap....I'd say stick with the proven "baby" cams and you'll be fine

both marc_w and I have almost the exact same setup and we've both been more than happy with the low-end gains...and the top-end gains are CRAZY !!!

My cam is a Vinci High Performance "044" 210º/218º .531/.531 114º, marc_w's is the same cam but ground on a 112º lsa. We both have stock TC's as well

The power increase from the cam is phenomenal !!!...I did a head-swap at the same time to a set of polished LS1 heads to raise compression to the same as the LQ9 but I really don't think the head-swap did alot for power production, I firmly believe the power increase was 95% cam and 5% head-swap

i wanted a 212/218 but you need tuning to idle.. or some trucks do atleast. The small cams like the ls6 dont need any tuning and you could see peak hp gains of 30hp! My buddie put a 01 ls1 cam in his 4.8 and you can feel a lil difference on top end pull..

maybe 12-13hp gained from that since the stock is like 190/191 114 and this is a 207/196 115.5 cam we didnt feel any low end loss with that swap

i have a 00 vette cam i might add to mine 209/198 115.5 but im debating just getting a 01 ls6 cam 211/204 116. I know some loos bottom end with the ls6 and they dont start pulling untill 3500rpms and up.. but im getting a 2600 stall to help with that

good thing about the cams above is you need no tuning, but of coarse tuning would make a lil more power. I just wanted my daily driver to have no tuning issues

I'm running untuned right now.....it idles and drives GREAT !!!, Nelson Performance is going to do my tune in the next few weeks (I ran out of money.....), I can only imagine what it's going to feel like once it's tuned and running properly !!!

damn... with my luck it would idle like crap though.. i'd love to have that cam, but cant risk it.. nelson wants 490 for a tune for mine

i know a few sold there 212's cause they needed tuning to drive the truck..

i hear that cam rocks tuned though
