Question Cam isn't even installed and I already want to go bigger..

I guess I need to stop reading on here....

I got stuck on the TR220 cam thread today and now I'm questioning my decision to go with the Comp 212/218 low lift

I really don't want to do a cam swap twice. I am planning a Circle D 3000 converter in my future, but it may have to wait for my 150k transmission to need work before I install that.

What do ya think? Is there a big enough difference between the TR220 & Comp 212/218 to warrant a change in direction??

Nothing. I'm pretty sure on that too. This truck will never be FI and I seriously doubt that I change the heads.

I have a short list of things I want, I've got some parts already, I'll get them installed as I go along and that's it. I may continue to do a few thing to the exterior but my engine and drive train mods are intented to be one time only. Tune, fans, pulley, cam, headers, LSD, transmission rebuild w/ upgrades - converter, servo, cooler, shift kit.

I'd go 220+. Anything smaller is too mild. Just my opinion...

Sounds like a NIB Comp 212/218 might be up for sale soon... Not fully decided yet, but leaning toward the TR 220.

You're not going to like the TR220 cam with a stock converter, especially the earlier 5.3s, that ran lower compression. That cam should also be run with headers. The 212/218 isn't a bad choice at all, for stock converter and stock exhaust.

I had a TR220 in my LS1 and it didn't run very well until I installed long tubes. I then put it in my buddy's 5.3 truck with a stock converter and no headers. The truck wasn't very impressive until he installed long tubes and a TT3200 converter.

You'll be much happier with a cam a little on the small side, than a little on the big side. I've had them on both ends of the spectrum, in several LSx platforms. I know it's not the popular thing to say on this forum, but it is the truth.
