Question Cam Heads Nelson Tune 5 Speed 4.8

Hey guys, I know you're tired of us 4.8 guys trying to make more power out of our "little" motors, but I love my motor, and my truck, thus, I have questions for you!

I have a 2000 RCSB 5-speed 4.8
To date I have installed full length headers, FIPK II, Free Flowing Exhaust, Granasmelly MAF Sensor and a Belltech 2/4 Drop.

I just recently acquired a 2002 LS6 Cam as well as a 2002 LS1 Camaro Electric Fan Set. The cam came with springs, retainers, etc.

I have heard that the COMP Cams 212/218 with the 114 LSA is a much better cam for my application than the LS6 Cam will be. Should I sell this LS6 cam and save money for the Comp, while still using the LS6 springs?? I'm a college student on a budget, which is why i would like to try to keep the springs to save me $400!! Or should I just use this cam and get a NELSON tune and be happy with my "power-on-a-budget."

I also found a place in Arizona that will Port and Polish my 4.8 Heads for a mere $400!! The guy guarantees 30 hp or a 50% refund. Good idea??

What else would you guys recommend?? Would 1.85 rockers work just as well as a comp 212/218??

I have had a lot of trouble finding a clutch for my truck. I believe I have the same transmission as the 5.2 liter Dodge Trucks (NV3500) but I wondered if I could use a Dakota High Performance Clutch . . . .

I'm hoping to feel the difference when I chuck the old clutch-fan for the camaro fan . . . what do you think??

Basically, I wondering how I'm doing . . . and what I'm forgetting about . .
any feedback/comments would be greatly appreciated!!

perhaps a 150 Shot of NO2??

Default Forgot something!! Thanks for your help

I am still working with a crappy ole 3.42 peg-leg.

should I fix my rear end first?? Where is a good place to transform my peg-leg to a 4.10 or 3.73 posi rear end?? How much money are we talking about?? Is is something I could do myself if I was careful, with the right tools??

I had the Comp 212-218 low lift in my truck and LOVED it. See dyno/track #'s in sig.

Here's the only link I could find for a clutch:

I say get rid of the LS6 cam and get the 208/216 crane cam like I have with the .530/.530 lift. You can still use the 2002 LS6 springs. This cam makes a bunch of mid-range and top-end power. I think the added mid-range would work real good with the manual tranny. The heads sound like a real good deal, I'd do it.

Futural recommended a 210/214 for my 4.8L with a 113LSA or 114LSA. They didnt specify on the lift. Hope this helps.

Default SO Ditch the LS6 Cam?? Who wants it!!!

Thanks a lot for all the replies guys!! I really appreciate the help . . .

I kinda thought I should ditch the cam, but I got a great deal on it, plus I knew I'd need those springs!!

Keep the feedback coming guys!! I'm eatin' it up!!

if you bring your ICL to somewhere inbetween 112-114 i think you would be ok with that cam. the difference between the cams there recommending for you and the LS6 cam would probably be very little. so unless you feel like spending 400 more on another cam, just keep it. i'd say if your gonna change go with the 01 vette cam. cheaper by 200 dollars and that would work well since your on a tight budget

how tight of a budget are you lookin at btw?

If your gonna keep it, advance it 4* by using an adjustable timing chain. It will bring your power band down a decent amount, more user friendly in a truck. What is this place in AZ?

Richard 99SilveradoSS has more displacement than yours, I have the Z06 cam in my 03 4.8 with factory springs, I have dyno sheets produceing 285 rwhp with no tuning & factory exhast manifolds. you will hate the Z06 cam though, it pulls really hard above 4,000 but no low end torque. If you get some custom tuning you might be a little more happy. I previously had a hypertech & still got hole shot 5-6 length's. I purchased ls1 edit with a couple of other people & I actually can hang with a 04 5.3 with the k&n set-up & ls1 edit as well. We both have the same gears & models 2wd ext cab's. In addition I have installed a stall, headers, true duals, x-pipe, oversized servos...ect. the 212/218 114 lsa cam is what I am about to go with, the Z06 just has no usable horsepower. You can degree it & get the powerband a bit lower but you will still be unhappy. You are missing the neck slapping torque!

I have a comp cam 224/224 114lsa and i love it. I also have some head work and other minor bolt ons. so far the best it made was 435rwhp. goin back to the dyno with a new tune table and am lookin to hit about 445-450 rwhp.
