Default Build or Buy???

Should I just build my LMG 5.3 or just buy a built supercharged 6.2 crate motor from GM? I figure I could sell the perfect 43k mile 5.3 and offset the cost. From my calculations I'll have dam near the same amount invested in the motor either way I go. My train of thought is, the 5.3 needs deletes and valve train upgrades, which costs about the same once completed and supercharged as a supercharged crate motor from GM performance that I assume has a warranty period and is assembled by GM trained techs. Help me out here guys! I need to hear from fellow members who have had this decision to make in the past...

When you say build are you building or having a shop do it? Cause if you are doing the work I would say build it, you will save a lot of money on that part. But that's just what I have learned.

I'm not doing the work a close friend is. The labor not included in the figure I'm still almost even.

If you are looking at deleting afm and even vvt, you should only have about 850-900 in parts before the supercharger. Cam is going to be the most expensive part, even if you get a cam kit that includes cam, lifters, springs and pushrods. iirc btr has cam kits for right at 650, then a new cam gear is about 40, the truck top plate is right at $45-50 from a dealer the just need a set of gaskets. Most supercharger kits are around $5500-6000.

What engine are you looking at through gm? The last suoerchraged crate engine i looked at was $12,000.

The 580 hp supercharged version.

I've been quoted about 10k in parts to build the 5.3. That includes, tvs2300, dod amf delete kit, BTR springs, oil pump, FI cam, 3 bolt cam kit, gaskets, 860 cc injectors and boost referenced aux fuel pump. I figure 1500 in labor so that puts me at 11,500 before tuning. With the 6.2 I would think I would just need to swap it and flash in mangnusons 6.2 tuning until I swap other parts onto it.

I was thinking I could sell the 5.3 for about 3k considering it is a 43k mile factory engine. What do y'all think?

10k sounds ridiculously expensive for that, dont the tvs2300 kits include injectors?

That's kind of what I thought. Not sure, I need to talk to Paul Webb again. I know with the flex fuel version the 1900 kit does not include injectors. The 2300 kit is about 6,500 so I don't think it does though, the extra 800 dollars over the tvs1900 kit is just for the blower upgrade?

The 2300 kit includes 60 pph injectors at least on the kit I have but mine is for a GMT800 truck. If you want flex fuel you will need larger than that anyway obviously........ non issue for me as E85 does not exist here lol. By the time you buy the parts and then have any labor done you are more or less at that crate engine price...... and still just a 5.3 lol. You could do a take off GM blower for half of the Maggie kit which would be what is coming on that crate... that's another option if you wanted a 1900. I am sure if you phone GM dealers you can get better pricing than that stuff on Summit. Hell there is a dealer in Quebec that prices there stuff around the same realm as what I pay in Alberta..... be worth your while with the way exchange is if there is no give on the crate engine pricing in the US. I am sure there is though..... but it requires picking up the phone lol.

For simplicity if the crate engine comes as a complete kit, with everything you need for the blower, and you have $12,000 then the 6.2 prepackaged may be the way to go, but if all youre trying to do is sc your truck, there are much less expensive avenues to go..i probably could've pieced the blower together for my yukon for less than what i had in the 6.2/6l80 swap, but i sure dont have $12,000 in it!
