Default brakes question?

well i have been haveing a very ANNOYING noise coming from the back end of the truck, sounds like metal rubbing on metal. however i couldn't ever figure it out. finally i jacked up the whole truck and started it up and put it in drive. (i know this was stupid but it had to be done). i took it to a dealership back in lubbock and they said the brakes were fine. well while the tires were spinning i got under the truck and basically listened for the noise. well i heard it coming from both sides of the rear brake areas. i have plenty of pad left but i am kinda thinking it might be warped rotors. so i guess my question is, does anyone else have this problem or anything like it? and how they solved it? is there a problem with our trucks warping rotors?

i have noticed this ever since i dropped my truck, which was almost a year ago. now it seems to be getting worse. i am 99% positive that it is coming from the brakes. any comments?

Honestly, I haven't heard of any problems with our truck warping rotors. If it was from one side, that'd be one thing, but from both sides? hmmmm.......

The drop really shouldn't have any affect on the rear brakes, I have a DJM 2/4 as well. But, If I were you, I'd take it in to a local dealership here in Houston to get it checked out.....Kinda surprised the dealership in Lubbock just said the brakes were fine, ignored the noise(?), and let u drive off......

I'd go get em checked out.......they very well could've gotten warped........and you definitely don't want it to get any worse......

Check another dealer. Do you use your parking brake much? It could be there. They are a PITA to work on. they are located in the axle housing, I believe. I read a thread about it once.

Yep, sounds like the parking brake shoes are gone. My '99 did the same thing. The rear brakes actually have a small set of drum brakes inside of the rear rotors, since the rear disc brakes can't be used as a parking brake. I very rarely used my parking brake, so I think it is either a badly designed brake setup or someone on the assembly line isn't checking the specs when they install them causing the shoes to constantly drag & wear out.

I ordered new shoes last fall, but haven't installed them yet. That truck is currently being driven with only one parking brake shoe in place because I trashed the driver-side shoe. The material on the shoe was worn down to the metal and it was rattling around inside the drum. The inside of the drum was pretty scored up and everyone suggests that the rotor needs replacing, but who gives a ****, it's just a parking brake, the rest of the rotor is fine. When I was taking the rear apart to find out what was wrong, the hardest thing to do was getting the bolts loose that attach the brake caliper bracket to the axle. They are torqued from the factory at ~250 ft.lbs. and are a bitch to get loose with crappy tools. I actually couldn't get the bolts on the passenger side of the truck loose, I bent the handle on the rachet I was using.

I can get you a part number for the replacement shoes sold separately, ~$20 each. The dealer will try to sell you a whole rear brake replacement kit for $100+.

thanks a lot yall, i am going to take it to the dealer i bought my truck at. they usually do a good job for me, meaning that they never say anything about my performance stuff. i am leaving my truck down here while i am summer school so it'll probably be after that until i can take it to the dealer. thanks again for the help.
