A tune after an air intake and different muffler? I put the stock air intake back on to see if the mileage goes back to where it was. I disconnected the battery to let the ecm reset also.

From what I have seen from dyno runs, headers don't cost out very well. I saw a gain of about 8 to 10 hp for around $500 to $800 or more. Doesn't seem like a good trade off. I think a good tune and cam swap would be a better deal.

It would be interesting to see some dyno runs of a stock truck and then add exhaust mods and run again. Then air intake and run again, and then a tune, and see what happens. I have a feeling the the exhaust is more for cool sound factor than pure performance. I can't say that my true duals with an H pipe did a lot for my 8.1
Could this be due to engine size? I was counting on more power by switching
To LT headers.

Fantastic thread, at least for this noob!

This is very great information. Im New to the building motor stuff I've always lifted trucks and left hp alone. I just bought my first 2wd truck its a 2001 Silverado with 5.3L. What do you suggest me purchasing for some quick hp gains. I'm looking to spend close to 1000 dollars this week. What's some stuff I should purchase first for quick hp and tq gains

Not when done correctly. However with a $1000 budget I would do the following.
Get an eBay cold air intake. ($55)
Get a magnaflow muffler installed ($200 installed)
Custom tune from one of the vendors Nelson black bear Wheatley ($300)
Longtube headers and ypipe from Texas speed and performance ($540)
