is it the battery or the starter???

ever since i got the truck it has done this. the battery shows up in the message canter (i dont know if they all do this when the ignition is turned). the truck has no problem starting cold, as in, its been sitting all night.
if i try to start it again after, say, i went into the store and came back out, it takes exactly 3 times, everytime to get it started again. whats up with this?...

The battery symbol shows up in the message center upon ignition feed. That's normal.
Are you saying though that your truck needs three attempts sometimes before it'll turn over?
If so, check;
1) Battery connections
2) Starter may be hanging up. When it does this, grab a mallot, hammer, flashlight end, something that can deliver a solid albeit not crushing blow to the starter housing. This will knock the armature of the starter loose from teh brushes along the wall that it got hung on.

The starter?
It is on the passenger side of the truck, you'll have to get underneath. The starter is a cylindrical motor that is mounted next to the oil pan and into the front of the transmission bellhousing.
