Default Bad coils possibly, need advice to troubleshoot

I am thinking that one or more of my coils may be bad and I wanted to get them tested, but no one seems to know if that is possible. Autozone is about as helpful as a condom with holes in it...

Can you test the coil packs to determine if they are bad? If they are bad, what can you replace them with? I dont want to pay $600 for msd. Will coil packs from other years LSx engines swap in directly? Like from a 2002 corvette? I found a set of 8 for $160...I may not need all 8 though...New AC Delco coil packs are around $40 new...

What is the best way to determine that one or more may be bad? I have a misfire occassionaly, replaced the plugs, wires, next is fuel injectors and coil packs...

does the misfire set a code? did you scan the code? is the code for a specific cylinder?

usually there will be a missfire code for cylinder X. switch coil pack for said cylinder with another cylinder and see if the missfire moved with the coil pack, if so, bad coil pack.

I have HP tuners with a aftermarket tune, no misfire codes, but have KR and the tuner and I have reduced the timing on my NA engine down below stock settings, richened it up, tried everything. I can here/ feel the truck miss...or stumble at idle.

Hey brotha' you can check those 2 diffrent ways. Most of my guys chekc them by taking one off and changing cylinders with it and see if that good cyl. will not hit with the coil in question. The way I check em' is, use a timing light. Although we have a distributorless ignition system , you can shoot the timing light at each wire and coil and if it good, the timing light will blink, if it's bad, the you'll get no light at all.

I had 2 coils fail last week on my own truck. So...I cruised onto Ebay and picked up a set of 8 MSD Blaster coils for $300. High I know...but it's still cheaper than OEM.

$300 for MSD? All I see on ebay is for $600 for a set of 8...I should watch closer.

I'll try that timing light trick...I'm sure if its intermitent, you will see an irregular pattern with the light as well...or a well established pattern if its good.

Thanks.

Yeah man, it will flash each time the coil puts out the spark pulse, so it will have a regular pattern. You are correct sir.

By the way, I got a Technician here that I think may possibly have some coils off his Camaro laying around. You want me to check with him and see if he wants to sell em'?

If worse comes to worse....I can ship you a coil real quick today on UPS. Check and see if yours are Mitsubishi coils or Delphi coils.
