Backup PCM?
#1
I want to get a backup pcm that I can edit and not touch my stock unit. What are the years that will work with my 02 GMC, ie 98-02 camaro/firebird or 99-05 GM 1500/2500/3500 or any other units?
Also my pcm and cluster will report different mileage won't they?

get an 02 pcm. they seem to run the best out of the ones from 99 to 02. after that the pcm pin outs change i think. plus drive by wire comes in then.no on the milage. if you have a 1500 then you need one for a 1500. they have a 5.3 or 4.8. the others will have the 6.0 and an 80e.

Thanks for the milage response. What I meant was Can I take my stock pcm. Copy the code off of it with ls1edit or hptuners. Then dump that info into another unit say from a TA or a Trail Blazer or a GM 2500. Do they all use the same pcm computer? What GM vehicles use a compatible PCM.
That is just scary, the mileage being stored in the cluster only... Bam, look I only have 20,000 miles on my rig...
Thanks

I'm pretty sure you will have to have a dealer flash the new pcm with your vin, so your truck will recognize it. HP tuners can't do that, it can only change parameters with in your PCM. Then you can start modifying it. That's what I've been told anyway.

So lets just say that I have a PCM from a 98-02 or 03 Trans Am, a SS, a Trail Blazer or an other GENIII based GM vehicle, I can go to the dealer and have them flash it with the info from my 02 truck vin? Yes , No? Is there a list of compatible PCM's?
Its hard for me to belive that GM did not make all the pcm controllers the same for GenIII based motors, other then the software thats on them.
I have a warranty on my truck through 07 and want to have the ability to put it back to stock after I smoke my tranny. Its my way getting the dealer back after them not fixing things, like the bumping steering shaft and the crazy a$$ fuel guage. Because apperently I broke those... And I love it how every year my front diff explodes and I have to wait 2 weeks for them to patch it back together. Other then that I love my truck...

no there is a three digit number that you will be looking for. yes you can rewrite the pcm with hp tuners. 4 something. if you are going to do that you should be able to use anypcm that is from 02 as long as it is for a truck.
