B&M tranny cooler torture test
#1
I posted a few weeks ago about tranny temps in my 99' GMC 6.0 getting a little on the high side while driving over the pass from Loveland to Grand Lake on Hwy 34. The tranny was seeing 220-230 and taking awhile to cool after the climbs. This was with outside temps being on the cool side above 10,000' (40-50 degrees).
Same scenario a few days ago with the exception of the outside temp. being warmer(70-ish) and a B&M 24000cvw cooler installed replacing the stock cooler. Tranny temps never went higher than 200 and would cool down in half the time after the hard climbs. Very pleased with the improvement. This is while towing a 14' flatbed full of dirtbikes and a 4-wheeler and a 2000lb slide-in camper loaded up.
Cooler install was a snap as the B&M is not too much larger length and width wise but about twice as thick and obviously engineered far better that the stock GM unit.

just last weekend I crossed Cajon pass (10,000+ ft/9-10% grade/7+ miles long) twice coming from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back towing a 22" flatbed with a Suzuki Gran Vitara going one way and a '73 Volkswagen Superbeetle going the other....I still have the stock cooler and with outside temps at 105+ I never saw tranny temps over 200, I was at 75-80 mph in overdrive with T/H on.....(and yes, it pulled the pass for the most part in overdrive...I was impressed myself)
If I have any temp problems thought I will definitly go for the B&M cooler because it sounds like a killer piece

We have one in our truck..of course no temp sensor anywhere but we hauled the 3300lbs formula on 1500lbs trailer 6 hours round trip and didn't seem to have a problem until we got in front of the shop where we felt the tranny slip.
We have the 24,000 B+M in it now and haven't towed yet but defnitely a good piece of insurance for any truck.

I'll never go with another cooler, the b&m 28gvw is badass, i'm not comfortable with trans temps over 160deg now that i have this one.
you can run the stock on in series or plug it off, the b&m does just fine by itself.
you'll need some 1/2 threaded , barbed fittings to install it., my local napa part had everything i needed.
later,
allen

Install was soooo simple. Remove the plastic shroud above the grill via about 8 plastic rivet thingys. Then turn 4 phillips head screws about a half turn in various positions on the grill and pop out the entire front piece. E-clips connect the lines to the stock cooler. A couple of 10mm bolts and the stock cooler is out. Use the supplied hose and clamps in the B&M kit, along with a bracket or two that's also supplied (I used one bracket) and that's it! A few zip-ties along the bottom made for a nice and snug riding cooler. EZ as pie!
