Arrow Automatics and cam changes...1 question

When changing my cam, is it necessary to drop the starter and install a gear "stop" or can I get by without doing so? I just need to know so I can pick up a gear holder in advance!

I guess your refering to when you need to remove that pulley. I'm interested in the same thing. I don't think it's an abosolutely necessary, but it may help a bit breaking the pulley loose. I seen someone suggest a chain wrench too. Not sure if that would mess it up or not. Do you have a link for the gear stop?

While you're in there, did you consider installing an ASP pulley? I am.

If you are referring to keeping the engine from turning over while trying to remove your crank bolt - all you need is a strap wrench to go around your crank pulley.

If you use a bad **** impact gun you don't need to do anything. That's what I did to change my pulley. I have a 600ft/lb gun and it still took like 3-4 minutes of constant trying to get it off. i also needed a long extension. I think I actually had 2 or 3 hooked together which probably soaked up some of my torque with the slack.

With a good strap and long breaking bar takes about 30 seconds, if that.

i just jam a long rod into the pulley and let it rest against the frame. then turn it till it stops and you're there man.

No, what I'm refering to is the FLYWHEEL! Sorry, I was half asleep earlier, anyway! It recomends to install a flywheel gear "stop" in place of the starter, or jam a big flat headed screwdriver in there to keep the crank from turning. This is what I was asking about.
Yeah, OBX, I've already installed my ASP Pulley, and you don't need anything but a "bad ****" impact to get the bolt out!!! At least that was my method, same as BAyou Z71, sounds like it could be the "country boy Z71" method of changing the pulley!! LMAO

So ... your question is do you need to get the flex plate stop thing to pull the pulley off????

I used a breaker bar. I made sure it was tight against the frame on the nut, then I would bump the starter. I did that twice, then it came right off.
