Default Anyone run a 220/220 cam in a 4.8???

Since I got a DD now, I was considering a TR220 @ 112 in my little 4.8.... Just wondering if anyone has experience runing it in a RC w/ a 4.8.... Mainly wanting to know general driving impressions, I will be doing the tuning so that wont be a problem...

Yes I know a converter will be needed, but it will be ordered after the cam install, that way I can have Greg at Phoneix transmission size it appropriately since they build all thier convertors in house per application...

Thanks

Corey

i would think it would be fine, but probably wont pull any till after 3K rpm's

not much of a bottom end with a fairly large cam in a 4.8, without headwork and compression, but it should be fine for driveability. mine is smaller than that of course, but it drives excellent, like the stocker. i think that cam will be as big as you want for the supporting mods that you have, and should be good for 30+ rwhp.

Yep I am also considering one similar to yours but a high lift on 112. Comp cam custom grind 212/218 56X/56X @112+2 on XE lobes.... Both are proven, just doin some research...

i have sitting at my house my Comp Cams 212/218 with 115slope.

Great low end torque setup with power band in the 1500-4k RPM range rather the 3-6krpm. Exactly what our 4.8's need

actually my friend, i would argue that the higher lift is not necessary on the 212/218 cam. mine is on a 114, for ease of tuning, but it still sounds great!

it made power up to 6500 rpm on the dyno, i think peak was around 6200 ish. we ran it up just to see where it fell off, and it only fell around ~7 hp at 6500...so i set my shift point at 6400, to put me in a higher power band for the next gear. it really made a substantial difference.

with the correct A/FR, timing, and shift points, i gained 4 tenths in the 1/8th mile n/a. that was AFTER i had a guy try to tune it for me with the same cam in...i just went to a pro tuner that knew his ****. my converter will unlock at WOT at almost any speed, but is set to lock around 100 mph or so.

i made right around ~305-310ish rwhp with my setup n/a. i would probably stick with the same cam i have if i were to do it again, being that my LS6 spring were only $50... if you go up to .550+ lift, you are going to need some larger capacity springs. $$$

Thanks I am still doin research, I have read tons of threads about that cam and what works with the 4.8... Alot say go to the higher lift, same say it is not needed... So I dunno, I am have about a month to decide before I pull the trigger, so I guess I will keep on researching... I did find a dyno sheet of a 4.8 with the high lift but on a 115lsa, but he was a 5 speed...

High lift, the TQ looks kinda funny thou...

Low lift, but in a 5.3, notice the flat TQ curve.

So maybe a low lift on a 112+2 LSA?? Any thoughts on that?

I Wanna Say Mine Is 114 + 4, But Cant Remember For Sure. Are You Just Wanting To Lope Around And Make Power Too?

A Good Choice Either Way You Go, Imo... It Doesnt Take A Big Cam To Make Good Power. You Want More Power Under The Curve, Who Cares About A Peak Number? Good Useable Power Gets The Truck Moving And Keeps It Moving.

Well I am wanting the lope and I want power more power under the curve... I totally aggree with you on the peak #'s, they mean nothing to me... But after reading the Cam Guide, it suggested that a lower LSA would bring the TQ in sooner, and also increase your DCR, which I think would create more power under the curve... looking at the 2 graphs I posted the low lift seems to be more power under the curve like I am wanting, The higher lift seems to be aimed more towards peak numbers, I think dropping the LSA on the low lift it will make it even better and give me the sound I am looking for...

My truck is at the shop right now getting the tr220 112lsa and supporting parts installed. I did alot of research and this cam was the one i found to be the best. I'm getting a custom dyno tune also. I should have the truck back next week and i'll keep you posted on the driveability and HP #s. I found that alot of people with the 212/218 like the cam, but eventually went bigger. I didnt want to have take the cam out and put a larger one in down the road.
