Default Anyone else with a bad steering shaft.

I started to notice a clunking noise coming from my steering column. It does it when you go over a bump slowly while turning. Went to the dealer to get my tail gate cables replaced and told them about it. The service writer knew right away. He said its the steering shaft where it connects to the box. They are on national backorder, 68,000 of them is what he told me. If you have the noise, take it to the dealer and get on the list. Said it wasn't a safety problem.

Thanks for the info. Here lately, I've been noticing a feeling in the steering wheel at slow turns, almost like it's a resistance in there. Checked the fluid and it was fine, so now I know what the problem is.

i have heard of this problem, it is like a bumping against the steering column, not what i would expect from a steering column problem but it fits the description. i have the problem too.

Well known problem on other boards. GM's first fixes under warranty was to lube it. WORKS for a short time. Latest is a replacement part. My truck has the clunk. I'll have it fixed, probably lubed, when I get my new tailgate straps since the backorder of parts, and wait for the replacement.

Real common...had my intermediate shaft replaced under warranty in 99. Noise came back and I lubed it with the kit from the dealer about 1 1/2 years ago...been good so far, but I think I'm starting to notice it again, very faintly. When it comes back totally I'll go for the redesigned shaft.

i have a 04 silverado and it has a clicking/poping noise when i do parking lot driving. took it in. she mentioned the stub shaft bearing for the steering colum. tech drove around with me. he heard the noise. said it was the crossmember bar. they tightened up front crossmember bar and suspension componets. Noise was gone for a few days. slowly starting to get a click/pop again. only 1100 miles on it now.

This is exactly what they did with mine. Both times were under warranty: lube it first. . .lasted about 3 months( or about 9000-10000 miles). Then it was back and I took it in again. They thought about lubing it again. . I told them to replace it - they did. So far, 10 months (~ 30,000 miles) and no problems.
