Before i put my v bands on after i cut the excess off etc, etc i am goin to run a pipe expander through my collectors... They measure 2 15/16 OD one direction,90* from that they measure right at 3" may wait til i tack the cbands in place and then run my expander through it.... After looking at these vbands am thinking if i slightly stagger the pipes in the flanges (have 1/4 sticking out past inner face of the flange on the collector and same distance retracted into the flange it may help to seal them better.....
Slight gap between v band flange and collector
V bands measure exactly 3"<br/><br/>I know not proper tool but its closest i could find at house at moment
Just thought I'd update you guys, I installed the headers this Friday at my dealership with a friend who's one of the heavy line techs:
It took us about 2 hours for the install, looking at the truck from the front of it, the left side bank we had to remove the dipstick and all the plug wires but it went in fairly easily, also none of my stock manifold bolts broke off on that bank so we reused all of them rather than the cheap bolts it came with, right side bank we had to remove the spark plugs for it to go into place but I did go in, we had one bolt break off(closest to the firewall) so we just left it alone but the rest came out( I spent everyday the past week spraying all of the bolts with ac delco dust inhibitor). We also removed those two stabilizer bars at the bottom of the truck for them to go up and into the engine bay.
Y pipe: for this we removed the cross member(jack up your transmission or the Bell housing for this) and the rear of the trucks cross bar. It did go in after alot of persausion and on of the pipes was bent a little so we had to beat it a bit, I only used two bolt band clamps and have no leaks so far from any of the fittings except I used one of the supplied clamps at the end of the y pipe to the pipe that connects with the cat back. Getting the y pipe and the catback to come together was the biggest pain as its an aftermarket catback and a few years old, we had to pull it off the exhaust hangers to push it into place with the y pipe but they did finally match together, ALTHOUGH THEIR WASNT ANY SUPPLIED BOLTS FOR THE YPIPE TO CATBACK so we had to go into the bolt box for some bolts and nuts for this part.
Truck pulls noticably harder now and is as loud as I've wanted it to be but its pretty raspy over 3000 rpm so I might need a deeper tone muffler.
I should also mention I didn't re tune, its already tuned for 87 and since I can't pull back timing anymore on 87 and the a/F ratio is already where it should be I just reset the tune(either reload the same tune or pull the negative on the battery for 30 seconds with the headlights on)
One last thing(sorry I keep forgetting stuff) although you might save some money buying wrap and wrapping stainless steel, I would HIGHLY suggest just shelling out some extra dough and buying ceramic coated headers because wrapping just sucks, I hated it so much and I used those metal zipties(I know I should've used hose clamps) and some of them are a tad loose after pulling them into the engine bay) but with dei titanium wrap the underhood temp is ice cold when the engine is warmed up and valvetrain noise is fairly quiet. But still, just buy some ceramic pacesetters and then get the y pipe from speed engineering or get a catted one for whatever your needs are, you'll spend a bit more but wrapping just plain sucks
The ones it came with didn't look like they fair very well compared to the stock ones, they didn't look close to oem as well, I have no plans to pull these headers off so it should be alright until I sell the thing or whatever I do
My headers didnt come with any bolts... Just a set of soft metal gaskes, umless im missing something somehwere...But i have a set of header bolts that came with my shortys and 2 sets of stock manifold bolts which ironically are the same length and head diameter
