It can be done, has, but not much.. It is more trouble then its worth.. I built 6.0 would do a circle around that.. Also the aftermarket for the BB are not big, the things that are available are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$..

Maybe down the quarter mile the 6.0 would win, but the 8.1 would stomp the living **** out of the small 6.0 for daily driving and towing (i.e. things a truck owner needs).

8.1 340 hp / 455 lb-ft
lq9 345 hp / 380 lb·ft
I think for the money, the time, effort the 6.0 is a better bang. But thats my op. Your not talking a whole lot there, for the price put a tq cam in the 6.0 and ball game is just about tied up on tq specs, still at a smaller price tag

Oh, and I agree....an 8.1 is completely impractical in a 1500 given that it's not direct like the 6.0, nor is there 1/10th of the aftermarket. Not to mention I think the engine got canned by GM.
That being said John, you can just post up those numbers without referencing the powerband. The small block LS only makes 380 lb/ft at 4400 rpm. The big block makes 455 lb/ft at 3200 rpms. Huge difference for towing and stuff like that.
Anyways, who here thinks GM needs to make a BIG BLOCK version of the LS engine!

i think they do, gotta love bigblocks, the torque, the grunt, the looks.....
hop into a 12 sec car with a small block, feels good
hop into a 12 sec car with a bigblock, feels like 10's, just something about it

I have both engines, the 8.1 is in an ECLB gmc 2500hd with the allison trans, bone stock, and the 6.1 is in my SSS with lots of mods. comparing them is apples to oranges. I am fairly certain that the 8.1 in a LD truck will get as good gas millage numbers comparable to a built 6.0, especially if you are planning on camming the sb. stock for stock the sb has more top end but the grunt of the bb is hard to miss. My stock HD can light up all four tire with no problem. As for towing, a built sb might be faster but the BB will just pull for ever and a day at a comfortable speed. And if you really want the wow factor, trow in some raylar componets and see how it does in a LD application
