Talking 8.1 Performance

Hey guys, im a relativley new owner of a 2001 2500HD crew cab silverado with the 8.1 motor. I know GM has a few of these motors for marine applications, does any one know the differences between the motors? Also what would you guys suggust for some upgrades? My truck came with a Flowmaster cat back allready installed. Unforutnatly I do live in so I have to deal with the smog ****'s. Thank you for your time.

The only difference between the truck and marine. Cam, injectors, and a computer.
Depending on what you want to do. I've seen 8.1 drop off 2sec in the 1/4mile with a cam, tune, intake, and exhaust.

Intake, exhaust and tune for sure.....easy mods, and big power adders when done all together. Cam would be nice, but pretty costly. how bout some nitrous?

The bad thing is that these 8.1 are cut back so much that some times you can get 50hp from a tune. A cam isn't to bad if you do the install yourself. Probably around $425 for one but you have to do springs too. Their's a good pick up from rocker arms and headers too.

Trooper,
1. What are your goals for the truck?
2. How do you plan to use it?
3. What is your budget over the next two years?

Tell us these things and we can be more specific.

All my best,

Steve

I have a 2001 2500hd 8.1/alison i have done catback(magnaflow), Gibson shorties, superchips programmer, airhog dropin, airaid MIT, stock airbox and this thing rips. imlooking to do a cam crane offers the best selection and tech help for us comp cams also has a few, for custom tuning i would go with westers or pmc forless seen lots of good review on these two for an 8.1l. I have not done a custom tune/cam because i am completely satified withthe performance for now good luck and gas will get you no matter what so go all out.

Tbyrne sells some heads for it.....You might want to check with him, he had an 8.1 truck and modded the hell out of it. The link to his site is located on the right------------>

Whipple makes a nice intercooled supercharger for the 8.1L.

Stick a Wester's in it and it'll blow you away !! You could get 1.2~1.5 seconds with a tune alone...

And get better mileage....
