is the pinging you are talking about a sort of high pitched whistle at high RPMs? cuz i have an 02 4.8L (no EGR) and it has that whistle. its been there from day one and through all 6500 miles so far so i assumed it was normal. just like the normal "clicking" noise that is supposedly the fuel system or something.

What I feel is a slight sputtering when I begin throttle tip-in. On autotap, I watch my timing drop several points at the same time, and see knock. Once revs get high enough (2200+), it goes away.

Really pinged all the time. I replaced plugs recommended on some of the BB's, and it helped a little. I just had the update done on my 01 and couldn't be happier. I just checked my mileage(75% city) and got 14.5. Possibly do to the fact that I just installed my upd for that tank. Nevertheless, the update was a good thing in my book. Also cured a hesitation I had a light throttle.

Thanks a lot for the great tips everybody! In regards to the software update gm offers, is this a update that would be covered under warranty or? Anybody pull a trailer with theres? How would the 6.0 like a 30ft enclosed? Its a 4x4 crew cab short bed! Thanks again for the advice.
