6.0 Pinging S.O.B.
#1
I Have a 2001 chevy h.d. with the 6.0 liter that i pull a trailer with. When the motor is under a load (with 91 octane) it pings pretty bad. Any suggestions. Also i have a 20ft trailer and am getting ready to invest in a 30-32ft will the 6.0 handle it??

is this a stock 6.0L? you dont have hypertech or anything on it do you? thats weird if it is something that always happens without advancing timing any and ruling out bad gas
if not id be taking it for a little check up for sure

Check for vacuum leaks around the intake plenum and PCV lines. It could be running too lean due to a vacuum leak therefore causing some pinging.
Or your EGR isn't turning on.

It helps richen up the mixture a little without having to dump more fuel into the combustion chamber.
Most pinging occurs from throttle tip in to midthrottle application where load is being placed on an engine, this is where the EGR system should be doing it's job.
I forget the exact criteria for it to turn on, but I know it was part of my Knock Retard problem at throttle tip in through mid throttle that I had becuase Ed Wrong had turned it off in my PCM.

Thats why I asked. I have the whole EGR assembly sitting on a shelf. Turned it off w/ LS1 edit.
I have KR at throttle tip in below 2000 RPMs. It is most noticeable at freeway speed w/ converter locked up. I pulled alot of timing out at those RPMs w/ no success. I completely removed converter lockup last week. That just about fixed it, but that will probably fix my gas mileage too.
So there is a good reason to have the EGR installed. What about 02 trucks and the vette? They dont have EGR. Do they have this problem?

There is, but if you have it turned off in the PCM it should be a moot point.
But then again, the engine itself doesn't know that.

Not sure on the gas mileage. I feel like it is an ever-changing, always evolving project. I cant leave it alone, so I have no idea how the EGR by itself effects gas mileage.
I think I will throw the EGR back on sometime and see what happens.
