1. the 5.3 is not the same as as the 5.7 ls1. Aside from a bigger displacement it's got an aluminum block. Both are still Gen3 engine.
2. You can add an ls1 cam to the 5.3 but the gains will be probably unoticeable unless you have a 99. There was someone someone here who got some nice gains out of a swap in a 99.
3. Again the difference is mainly displacement along with the 5.7 bieng aluminum. I belive the 01 and older 6.0 even had cast iron heads. Still they are all Gen 3 engines.

I was thinking about the same thing on my 5.3 the problem is the bore is smaller than the 5.7, 6.0 or ls6, this would leave a lip which can cause heat spots (detonation) and improper combustion/fuel mixture. I talked to several sponsors on this site who advised against it, whether they are right I dont know. Im just relating what I was told
if anyone is running heads on a 5.3 that were meant for a larger bore Id love to hear the results. If I had to do it again I would of simply gotten some cnc'd 5.3 heads from one of the sponsors on the right stage one should be enough for these little motors.
The only reason Id go with another lsX style head with a larger cc is for FI

I would stay away from Patriot heads. I have no personal experience with them, but a lot of f-body guys have had problems with them. In fact there is a recall of Patriot heads in the internal section right now.

A general note about performance 5.3 heads:

F-body guys like to use 5.3 heads to raise their compression because of the smaller combustion chamber. But to make that worthwhile, the chamber is opened up to the larger 5.7 bore, which makes these heads undesireable for our little engine.

Your best bet is to call some of the shops on the right and speak to them. Make sure they are aware that the heads are actually going on a 5.3. I hear that Futural Motorsports is good with trucks.

If you dont want any downtime or this is your daily you can get some 5.3 heads cheap I paid 160 with shipping for mine from someone on the board. Then send them to someone to cnc and valve angle, put springs in at same time and there you go. I had thought about the patriots some people have luck with them some dont the choice is yours and the price is enticing. let us know what you decide and how it goes.
