Hmm... where'd this idea come from? I seem to remember this being done before.

Better get that tranny built to handle the torque in a modified 5.3L. It will not last long in stock form. Ask me how I know this...

save yourself blood sweat and tears and go with a 383.

way easier!
way cheaper!
way more aftermarket parts!
and a 383 sounds wicked!

I have comtemplated this many times in my 51 chev, trust me, gen 1 small block is the way to go.

to push your truck into the 12s that 4.8 is going to need a lot of work. and money. a gen 1 is going to be alot cheaper and easier to move into the 12s. a 383/th350 is alot easier to get parts for at cheaper prices. just mounting the 4.8/4l60 is going to hell with all the wiring harnesses and electric fuel pumps your going to have to invest in. i considered going both ways and stuck witha 383. its built now i just gotta finish collecting the final pieces to get it to run

btw mines in a 70 chevy c10 longbed i attached an old picture

5.3 man....i heard that the box styles are actually alot lighter than the new single cabs...with full boltons, a good cam, built tranny and stall you'll have that thing in the mid 12s for sure.

i have an 83 shortbed. it weighs in at 3750 with halftank of gas. full interior, no power locks or windows. thats a good bit lighter than the newer trucks. a 383 will get you 12's now problem.
